Listeria monocytogenes (abbreviated Lm) is a foodborne pathogen that causes a group of human illnesses collectively called listeriosis. Human listeriosis is mostly acquired by ingestion of ready-to-eat (RTE) foods contaminated with L. monocytogenes. Consumption of such foods and concerns about listeriosis have increased greatly during the past 30 years in developed countries. South Africa is now known to have the largest Listeriosis outbreak on record which took place in 2018-2019.
